1/24 Plafit CanAm Lexan Body Mounting

Post by jacco »

Hi All,
Does anyone have any tech tips and photos on how to mount/align a Lexan/PET 0.020 body on a Plafit 1300U 1/24 chassis? (I assume the usual "Aussie Retro" pinhole or GT1 wire approach are not the way to go....).

I have mounted a hardbody on a 1/32 Plafit chassis before, not sure if Lexan/PET body goes on the same way.
many thanks,
jacco

Jacco,

Welcome to the world of scale racing. The easy method of body pins or clips is definitely out.

You have to use the rubber that comes with the chassis and glue.

Jacco,

Use contact glue to attach strips of the Plafit foam rubber to the aluminium mounts and adjust the width so it fits snug inside the body.

Put body tape on the inside of the body to glue to or the glue will wreck your paint job.

With the car sitting on a setup board do a trial fit using coins to hold the body up off the board. It should be snug but able to slide on the foam.

Once you're happy with how it fits use contact glue on both sides (foam and tape) and put it together wet. Set it up on the board with your coins again and it'll dry in a few minutes but you'll have plenty of time to get it right.

Once it dries make sure you've got a good glue joint, add more glue if needed.

If you stuff it up just cut the foam neatly with a sharp razor knife and the glue it back together in the right place.

Tips -

Try and lock the 'H' plate down somehow (tape?) so it doesn't move around on you. The 1700 chassis has screw holes to lock it down.

About 6mm to 8mm wide foam is plenty and if you want to get serious try a dog bone shape with a narrow centre section or even just a bit at each end.

Before gluing, make sure you've finished adjusting and tightening any screws that you can't get at once the mounts are glued in.

You need to mount the body a little higher than the 1mm clearance, most people use 20 or 50 cent pieces. At the back use whatever you can find that's the right height.

Although it sounds like a nightmare way to mount a body it's really quite easy.
Cheers,

Thanks Gary, that's the almost the same as the method used for the hardbody on the 1/32 plafit.
Good to have these tips.
cheers,
